ASEAN Cement Manufacturers met in Hanoi
ASEAN Federation of Cement Manufacturers (AFCM) member countries gathered in Hanoi on November 1, 2007 to discuss the future of the industry.
At the 15th Congress, the participants included representatives from Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines and Vietnam.
The cement industry in ASEAN member countries has developed rapidly since the 1980s. During the 1985-1997 periods, ASEAN member countries turned out 107 million tonnes of cement, representing a growth rate of 272 percent.
However, after the 1997 financial crisis, the demand for cement has decreased by 30.5 percent.
The industry is said to be recovering but the over-supply situation remains
